Tatami Tea Room

One of the projects I did for my MA was a diorama of a Japanese tea house. I was inspired by a then recent visit to Japan. I used pictures from trip to Japan as well as visiting the British Museum’s Japanese gallery to find furnishings and other small items to layout within my diorama.

My main focus point with this project was to create an environment that was fitting to aspects that I found during my research as well as creating a realistic representation of a Japanese tea house. To create the realism I looked at two core aspects; the Tatami mats and the minimalist nature of the scene. Secondary aspects included the Fusuma (interior Shoji doors) and the geometric ceiling pattern (Inspired by a Japanese tea house in Vancouver).
